Traveling Art May 27, 2011
Today I picked up a piece of art I had in a show 45 minutes from where I live. I am thinking about entering a contest in Vancouver, WA. I really like the theme and I have some paintings that fit it. I have shipped paintings - a large one at that - to Harrisburg, PA and Dayton OH. Built the crates and paid the postage to and from the event. Is it worth it? In these instances, I felt ok about the expense. One was juried by an assistant curator at the MET in NY. Ah, yeah, I think I'll send those paintings off. The other was in the name of Peace - a worthy cause and the juror was from London. Do I go for it? Is it really worth it to ship the work out knowing it probably won't sell? Do people go to the venue to see it? Do I let my work sit in my studio when I have an opportunity to get it out in the world? The question of showing art on walls, in print or via the internet is one to ponder.
